Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback? From Atlantic Council

The world is in the throes of a nearly decade-long global democratic recession. Democratic breakdowns in strategically important countries like Russia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Egypt, and Venezuela are cause for serious concern, as are reversals in Turkey and Hungary. Vladimir Putin's revanchist policies in the heart of Europe highlight how domestic democratic setbacks can have serious negative regional reverberations. Is Authoritarianism Staging A Comeback? offers answers to why authoritarianism is gaining on democracy. A score of prominent democracy scholars and activists at leading universities, think tanks, and civil resistance NGOs have written essays for the book on these key questions. Is Authoritarianism Staging A Comeback? also provides advice on what kind of civil resistance efforts will work and why against authoritarianism. With clear evidence of authoritarians learning from one another, there is urgent need to rework old tools and develop new ones to help support local nonviolent civil organizations that are increasingly under pressure. The editors-Mathew Burrows and Maria J. Stephan-are leading an initiative at the Atlantic Council-rated one of the top think tanks globally-on how external actors can reverse authoritarianism's recent gains by boosting democracy's prospects. Is Authoritarianism Staging A Comeback? is one of the first fruits of that effort.

So glad this book was finally written!
By Erin
I'm so excited that Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback? is finally here! This is a unique view of the rising tide of authoritarian dictators but, with that, more people-powered social movements that are proving the best and most untapped weapon against it. Burrows and Stephan offer an inspiring view of what's possible if, like dictators, we could all learn from the collective actions courageous individuals are catalyzing all over the world in democracies and backsliding autocracies alike.

the roles of authoritarian countries like Syria and Russia played in international instability
By HONEY AL SAYED
In turbulent times, where injustice prevails, and Democracy still an aspiration, "Is Authoritarianism Staging a Comeback?" is a timely read.
The book deciphers the Five W's (who what why when where) and the how such as: the roles of authoritarian countries like Syria and Russia played in international instability; the Arab Spring's failure to produce democracies; the role of civil society actors; a new breed of diplomacy; and whether or not authoritarianism is staging a come back and if so how do we push back? Intriguing!

From Booklist
*Starred Review* The value of a spin-off reference work lies in its updated content, lower cost, and depth of coverage appropriate for specialized collections. The Grove Encyclopedia of Islamic Art and Architecture lends a new perspective to a discipline that has become critically important since the publication of its parent set, the 34-volume Dictionary of Art (1996). Bloom and Blair, Islam and central Asia editors for the parent set, used as their point of departure the Dictionary of Art’s 468-page article on Islamic art plus Islam-related content from other articles, including Arms and armor, Jewelry, and Papercuts. They define Islamic art as that “made by artists or artisans whose religion was Islam, for patrons who lived in predominantly Muslim lands, or for purposes that are restricted or peculiar to a Muslim population or a Muslim setting.” Within that framework, the encyclopedia encompasses “art and architecture in southern Europe, northern Africa, and west, central, and south Asia over 14 centuries.” The goal was to “make the relatively obscure field of Islamic art as accessible as possible to the widest possible audience” and to “encourage readers to explore other aspects of Islamic civilization and the interrelationships between Islamic art and other artistic traditions.” The encyclopedia contains 1,600 articles by 375 scholars and more than 600 photographs, black-and-white reproductions, color plates, drawings, maps, and floor plans. Entries often begin with a brief definition and then place the topic within the context of Islamic art. Some include alternate vocabulary, such as the 14 words used for Caravanserai in locations from Baghdad (dar) to Fez (funduq). Articles on broad topics are long—the editors note the book-length Architecture—and headnotes list their divisions, usually chronological and geographic. Many of the extensive bibliographies (Berber, Calligraphy) include items published after 2005. Bibliographies also include carefully selected Web sites, such as the complete digital archive of Gertrude Bell’s photos, diaries, and letters. This set is an exemplary spin-off. It is not only highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries but its survey articles and sections on history, historiography, and approaches to scholarship are required reading for graduate students, who will find especially valuable the editors’ tip that “there are dissertations waiting to be written here!” Also available in an e-reference edition as part of the Oxford Digital Reference Shelf collection. Articles in Oxford Art Online, the electronic Dictionary of Art, are not the updated versions. Also available as an e-book. --Christine Whittington

Review

"This volume is everything that one has come to expect from a Grove title: literate, comprehensive, and authoritative . . . for libraries with specialized art or Islamic collections, this is essential."--Library Journal (Starred Review)

"The editors are to be saluted for the vast amount of readily accessible information contained in these three volumes."--The Art Magazine

"It is not only highly recommended for academic and larger public libraries but its survey articles and sections on history, historiography, and approaches to scholarship are required reading for graduate students, who will find especially valuable the editors' tip that 'there are dissertations waiting to be written here!'"--Booklist (Outstanding Review)

"Jonathan M. Bloom and Sheila S. Blair continually publish excellent resources about Islamic art and architecture for the English-speaking world. Their latest opus, The Grove Encyclopedia of Islamic Art and Architecture, is worthy to be included on their stellar list of classic works not only for being the only resource in English solely devoted to Islamic art and architecture, but also for its unparalleled scholarship."--American Reference Books Annual

"Essential. Upper-level undergraduates and above; general readers"--CHOICE

"Based on their collective and solo achievements, Bloom's and Blair's GEIAA is destined to become the definite work in the area of Islamic art and architecture, which will undoubtedly be on the shelves of all libraries."--American Reference Books Annual

Much too technical for me. I have read a number of books on the subject. So, I am certainly interested in in-depth knowledge. But this book is too specialized, dealing with economic conditions in particular.

A medicinal pill for the effortlessly righteous
By B. LEAK
The book sometimes hides its thesis behind detail, and is not easy to follow. It was finished for the press before the Croat offensive of Spring 1995, and loses some perspective in consequence. Hence only four stars! It is very thoroughly researched (not just full of footnotes), and it is one of the very few books on the Bosnian war which doesn't simply pick heroes and villains - which has, of course, led to it being denounced as pro-Serb. Woodward's main line is that the basis of conflict was 'the economy, stupid'. Successive blunders in the terms of IMF loans, and misjudged changes in the federal constitution, set the constituent republics against each other. Misunderstanding of the issues (and German/Austrian favouritism to Balkan clients) led the European powers into grossly unprincipled and utopian interventions. The federation was levered apart, while preserving intact the constituent republics. This was a 'solution' to the wrong set of problems. The United States, continually encouraging the Bosnian Muslims to wait for the NATO fairy to rescue them (it didn't), completed the sorry work of war-making - though this last element is better documented elsewhere (e.g. in Rose's _Fighting for Peace_). I don't agree with all of the author's opinions. In particular, I think national allegiances run deeper and history is more relevant than she wants to believe. But it is a serious attempt to rescue this piece of contemporary history from self-indulgent moral one-upmanship and propaganda saturation. If only Woodward could write as well as Ivo Banac!

Gutsy scholarly challenge to the conventional wisdom.
By A Customer
Woodward, a scholar at the Brookings Institution, argues provocatively, but convincingly, that the breakup of Yugoslavia and the resulting ethnic conflict was _not_ inevitable and could have been avoided if the West had given more support to leaders within Yugoslavia (e.g. Ante Markovic) who wanted to promote democracy as well as free-market economic policies. She directly challenges the conventional wisdom articulated by the more readable and widely read "Balkan Ghosts" that history and culture made conflict in Yugoslavia inevitable. The complex and lengthy text of Woodward's book may deter some, but the highly nuanced arguments will prove fertile ground for those who want to better understand the causes of ethnic conflict both in Yugoslavia and more generally

The End of Your World: Uncensored Straight Talk on the Nature of Enlightenment (Sounds True Audio Learning Course), by Adyashanti

For those serious about enlightenment, author and teacher Adyashanti has some advice: better know what you're getting into. Because with spiritual awakening, you find that the strongly held beliefs and perceptions you've taken to be 'you' and 'your world' vanish into the unmanifest nature of all that is. The End of Your World presents a landmark six-CD course on the reality of enlightenment and the total re-wiring of your being that accompanies it what Adyashanti calls our journey into the infinite, our true nature as pure consciousness itself.

This is a Great Book for Straight talk about the Path
By Robert Clark
This is a Great Book for Straight talk about the Path

If Adyashanti is someone you have read or listened to, this is a good book if you want to move past non-abiding to abiding.

This is not something to just start on with.

You should have a affinity with the Author and how he teaches or be on the Path and need some help going to abiding (this can help)

I loved this book!
By Kindle Customer
I loved this book on awakening/enlightenment. So honest, sincere, offering wonderful thoughts to ponder. After a lifetime of reading and trying to live what I learn to the best of my understanding, I'm still a novice on this human level. But with all the reading I've done, I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in the process of awakening from the dream and some of the repercussions that some experience.

Documentation of experiences
By Curtis Wee
There are many books written on the topic of enlightenment and the beauty of this book is in the author's experiences in the journey of self awareness that people may discover within their lives. There are no instructions in how to do this thing called enlightenment because people make that into a concept and thereby divorcing the true nature from it. I found that through reading this book, I have learned to be aware of my inner state and any attempt by the mind to try to make it into a concept. The truth lies within all of us and our paths to its discovery can vary. Any attempt to write about it are simply signposts and not the reality of it. So the enlightened reading sees it as such and can connect through language the best that we can. I found it refreshing and useful in my own path of Self realization.

1. 6 words that will forever change how you see happiness

Let’s start off with some bad news. The happiness model we’re taught from a young age is actu-ally completely backward. We think we work hard in order to achieve big success and then we’re happy. We think the scribble goes like this:

Study hard!→ Straight A’s! → Be happy!
Interview lots! → Great job! → Be happy!
Work overtime!→ Get promoted! → Be happy!

But it doesn’t work like that in real life. That model is broken. We do great work, have a big success, but instead of being happy, we just set new goals. Now we study for the next job, the next degree, the next promotion. Why stop at a college degree when you can get a master’s? Why stop at Director when you can be VP? Why stop at one house when you can have two? We never get to happiness. It keeps getting pushed further and further away.
What happens when we snap “Be happy” off the end of thisscribble and stick it on the beginning?

Now everything changes. Everything changes. If we start with being happy, then we feel great. We look great. We exercise. We con- nect. What happens? We end up doing great work because we feel great doing it. What does great work lead to? Big success. Massive feelings of accomplishment and the resulting degrees, promotions, and phone calls from your mom telling you she’s proud of you.

Harvard Business Review reports that happy people are 31% more productive, have 37% higher sales, and are three times more creative than their counterparts.

So what’s the first thing you must do before you can be happy? Be happy.Be happy first.

Being happy opens up your learning centers. Your brain will light up like Manhattan skyscrapers at dusk, sparkle like diamonds under jewelry store lights, glow like stars in the black sky above a farmer’s field.

American philosopher William James says, “The greatest dis- covery of any generation is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitude.”

The Happiness Advantage author Shawn Achor says, “It’s not necessarily the reality that shapes us but the lens through which your brain views the world that shapes your reality.”

William Shakespeare says, “For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”

2. The single biggest reason it’s so hard to be happy

Shakespeare says, “For there is nothing either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.” But if it’s just thinking, plain thinking, why can’t wethink ourselves into a good mood whenever we want?

Seems like we should be able to just flip a mental switch.

But we all know it’s not that easy. Sometimes our brains get fo- cused on negative things. We can’t stop! I do this all the time. And you want to know a secret? Everybody does. Every single person gets stuck focusing on the negative sometimes. I’ve spoken on stages with the best-known motivational speakers, Fortune 500 CEOs, and political leaders from around the world. Do you know what they’re all doing backstage? Freaking out. Sweating. Thinking something might go wrong.

We all have negative self-talk. There is no such thing as an eter- nal optimist. There are people who feel optimistic, but those people have negative self-talk, too. And that’s okay. The problem isn’t that we have negative thoughts in our brain.

The problem is we think we shouldn’t have negative thoughts.

But why do our brains focus on negative things? Once we under- stand this we can learn how much we can control and make con- scious efforts to be happy using proven techniques.

This is one of the most important things I can share with you. Why is it so hard to be happy?

Because life was mostly short, brutal, and highly competitive over the two hundred thousand years our species has existed on this planet. And our brains are trained for this short, brutal, and highly competitive world.

How short, brutal, and highly competitive was it?Let’s do a quick experiment.

Stop, close your eyes, and picture the last time you felt com- pletely alone in the middle of nowhere.

Was it camping in the mountains when you walked away from the fire and stood on the jagged edge of a mirrory lake? Was it a misty waterfall you found on a field trip when your classmates dis- appeared and all you could hear was the wind rustling the leaves in the forest canopy? Was it jogging at sunrise on a sandy beach when you curled around the coastline and suddenly couldn’t see anyone for miles in any direction?

Picture yourself back in that scene.

Now mentally erase from our planet all of the following:
• Toilets
• Sinks
• Showers
• Running water
• Computers
• Phones
• Internet
• Beds
• Chairs
• Roads
• Bikes
• Cars
• Planes
• Boats
• Books
• Paper
• Pencils
• Pens
• Hospitals
• Doctors
• Medicines
• Tools
• Grocery stores
• Fridges
• Freezers
• Farms
• Stoves
• Microwaves
• Shirts
• Sweaters
• Jackets
• Pants
• Socks
• Shoes
• Underwear

You are now standing alone in the middle of the planet with none of those things. Take your phone out of your pocket and toss it away. Take your shoes and shirt off, too, because they don’t exist. Take everything off. You are completely naked with noth- ing around. None of those things exist. And none of them will be gin to exist before the end of your life!

Now close your eyes, picture yourself there, and remember that:

99% of our history was living in this world.
99% of our history was with a life span of thirty years.
99% of our history was with brains constantly battling for survival.

Life was short, brutal, and highly competitive, and we have the same brains now that we’ve had throughout our history.

Were we happy back then? The better question is: Did we have time to be happy?

This instinctive need for what we don’t yet have creates in us a persistent state of dissatisfaction. Without it, our ancestors would always be only one failed hunting session away from starvation. This simple, ruthless script is pro- grammed to drive survival at all costs. It works exceed- ingly well for this purpose, but it leaves us feeling stress and unpleasantness much of the time. Unhappiness is na- ture’s way of keeping people on their toes. It’s a crude sys- tem, but it has worked for thousands of years.

We have the same brains we’ve always had through this short, bru- tal, and highly competitive time in our history. Our brains didn’t just suddenly change when we got printing presses, airplanes, and the Internet. How have our brains been programmed?

What did this fear do? It drove our survival. We survived at all costs. We were paranoid. We were fighters. We were ruthless. We were brutal. We were murderous. And because of it . . . we got here. And because of it . . . we took over the planet. And because of it . . . we have everything in the world.

So this begs the question: Is that fear still programmed into our heads today?

3. The one thing your doctor, teacher, andTom Hanks all have in common

Yes, that fear is still programmed into our heads.

It’s everywhere, it’s between our ears, it’s in our brains. Tom Hanks, one of the world’s most successful actors, who earnsmillions with every movie and has scored two Academy Awards, said, “Some people go to bed at night thinking, ‘That was a good day.’ I am one of those who worries and asks, ‘How did I screw up today?’”

Andy Grove is the longtime Intel executive who helped trans- form the company into a multibillion-dollar success. He was be- lieved by many to have helped drive the growth phase of Silicon Valley, was named Time’s Man of the Year in 1997, and was idolized by Steve Jobs, according to Jobs’s biography. How did he famously put it? “Only the paranoid survive.”

Our brains still follow this paranoid model every day, and it is a recipe for unhappiness! Some call it Medical Student’s Syndrome. That’s a term Jerome K. Jerome first coined in his 1889 classic, Three Men in a Boat: “I remember going to the British Museum one day to read up the treatment for some slight ailment of which I had a touch—hay fever, I fancy it was. I got down the book, and read all I came to read; and then, in an unthinking moment, I idly turned the leaves, and began to indolently study diseases, generally. I forget which was the first distemper I plunged into—some fearful, devastating scourge, I know—and, before I had glanced half down the list of ‘premonitory symptoms,’ it was borne in upon me that I had fairly got it.

“I sat for a while, frozen with horror; and then, in the listlessness of despair, I again turned over the pages. I came to typhoid fever— read the symptoms—discovered that I had typhoid fever, must have had it for months without knowing it—wondered what else I had got; turned up St. Vitus’s Dance—found, as I expected, that I had that, too—began to get interested in my case, and determined to sift it to the bottom, and so started alphabetically—read up ague, and learnt that I was sickening for it, and that the acute stage would commence in about another fortnight . . .”
It’s not just medical students. We’ve all been there.

We scan the world for problems because that led to our survival. And our current design of the world only reinforces and grows these negative-lens feelings.

At your doctor’s office when you get lab results, the doctor says, “Your blood sugar is fine, your cholesterol is fine, but your iron is low.” What do you do? You talk about getting your iron up. Eat steak! No work is done improving your blood sugar or cholesterol. If cholesterol should be below 200mg/dL and you’re at 195, great! If you’re 205, that’s a problem. Doctors get paid when we’re sick. Shouldn’t we pay them when we’re healthy?

Retail store managers “manage by exception” by staring at morning reports, finding a number below average, and trying to bump it up. If that report says your traffic count is fine, basket size is fine, but checkout time is below average, what does the boss want? Faster checkouts. More cashiers! No work is done improving statis- tics that are already average.

In the classroom the teacher hands back test results and offers extra help to those below average. They have to pass! If not, theyear is repeated, the system is drained, friends all move ahead. What happens for the below average kids? Extra help at lunch. Tutoring sessions. Remedial tests. Why aren’t students who get 100% offered any extra challenge?

It’s no different in the workplace. We get job evaluations show- ing how well we’re doing. What happens if you’re below expecta- tions? Performance improvement plan! Extra meetings with the boss! Shipped to training classes! What happens if you’re doing well? Two percent raise. Pat on the back.

Rather than find good results and make them better, our brains do this:

1. Look for problem.
2. Find problem.
3. Improve problem.

That’s what our brains have been trained to do for two hun- dred thousand years. But because we scan the world for problems, sometimes that’s all we see. Here’s how New York Times–bestselling author Kelly Oxford framed our Medical Student’s Syndrome on Twitter: “WebMD is like a Choose Your Own Adventure book where the ending is always cancer.”
So what do we do about it?

5. How much can we control?

Aristotle says, “Happiness depends upon ourselves.”

Viktor Frankl says, “Everything can be taken from a man but one thing: the last of the human freedoms—to choose one’s at- titude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one’s own way.” Walt Whitman writes, “Keep your face always toward thesunshine—and shadows will fall behind you.”

I love what Artistotle, Viktor Frankl, and Walt Whitman say. But how do you get there?
Well, we now have scientific evidence of the importance of atti- tude and specific proven actions we can take to manage our attitude.

Do you know what’s amazing about this quote? The second last sentence!

“I am convinced that life is 10% what happens and 90% how Ireact to it.”

Well, new research published in The How of Happiness by Uni- versity of California psychology professor Sonja Lyubomirsky tells us exactly how much of our happiness is based on our life circumstances.

And it is 10%!

10% of our happiness is what happens to us.

So 90% of our happiness isn’t based on what’s happening in the world! It’s based on how we see the world. What’s included in the90%? Our genetic predisposition and our intentional activities. Yes, intentional activities. This is big. Those are specific things we can do to improve our happiness. And they alone have four times the ef- fect on our happiness than anything happening in our life.

Let me put it another way:If I knew everything about your life circumstances—your job, your health, your marital status, your income—I could predict only10% of your happiness. That’s it!
The remaining amount is not de- termined by your external world but by the way your brain pro- cesses it.

6. 7 ways to be happy right now

How do you be happy first?

For this chapter we look to the emerging field of positive psychology. What’s that? It’s not fluffy lollipop experiments. Pro- fessors of psychology Martin Seligman and Mihaly Csikszentmih- alyi are called the fathers of positive psychology because of their passion for cold hard facts. As they put it themselves in American Psychologist:

“Psychology is not just a branch of medicine concerned with ill- ness or health; it is much larger. It is about work, education, insight, love, growth, and play. And in this quest for what is best, positive psychology does not rely on wishful thinking, faith, self-deception, fads, or hand-waving; it tries to adapt what is best in the scientific method to the unique problems that human behavior presents to those who wish to understand it in all its complexity.”

Positive psychology is a new and growing field.

I have sifted through hundreds of studies to find the Big 7 ways to train your brain to be happy. Many of these studies have been discussed in journals, conference keynotes, and research reports, but I’ve brought them together for you here.

If you do any of these seven things for two straight weeks, you will feel happier.

So what are the Big 7?

1. Three Walks

Pennsylvania State researchers reported in the Journal of Sport & Exercise Psychology that the more physically active people are, the greater their general feelings of excitement and enthusiasm. Researcher Amanda Hyde reports, “We found that people who are more physically active have more pleasant-activated feelings than people who are less active, and we also found that people have more pleasant-activated feelings on days when they are more physically active than usual.” It doesn’t take much: Half an hour of brisk walking three times a week improves happiness. The American Psychosomatic Society published a study showing how Michael Babyak and a team of doctors found that three thirty-minute brisk walks or jogs even improve recovery from clinical depression. Yes, clinical depression. Results were stronger than studies using medi- cation or studies using exercise and medication combined.

2. The 20-Minute Replay

Writing for twenty minutes about a positive experience dramati- cally improves happiness. Why? Because you actually relive the experience as you’re writing it and then relive it every time you read it. Your brain sends you back. In a University of Texas study called “How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Words,” research- ers Richard Slatcher and James Pennebaker had one member of a couple write about their relationship for twenty minutes three times a day. Compared to the test group, the couple was more likely to engage in intimate dialogue afterward and the relationship was more likely to last. What does the 20-Minute Replay do? It helps us remember things we like about people and experiences in our lives.

3. Random Acts of Kindness

Carrying out five random acts of kindness a week dramatically im- proves your happiness. We don’t naturally think about paying for someone’s coffee, mowing our neighbor’s lawn, or writing a thank- you note to our apartment building security guard at Christmas. But Sonja Lyubomirsky, author of The How of Happiness, did a study asking Stanford students to perform five random acts of kindness over a week. Not surprisingly, they reported much higher happiness levels than the test group. Why? They felt good about themselves! People appreciated them. In his book Flourish, Professor Martin Seligman says that “we scientists have found that doing a kindness produces the single most reliable momentary increase in well-being of any exercise we have tested."

4. A Complete Unplug

“The richest, happiest and most productive lives are characterized by the ability to fully engage in the challenge at hand, but also to disengage periodically and seek renewal,” say Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz in The Power of Full Engagement. And a Kansas State University study found that complete downtime after work helps us recharge for the next day. Turning your phone off after dinner. Not using the Internet on vacation. There’s a lot more to this, and we’re going to chat about it in Secret #6. If you can’t wait, flip to page 145.

5. Hit Flow

Get into a groove. Be in the zone. Find your flow. However you characterize it, when you’re completely absorbed with what you’re doing, it means you’re being challenged and demonstrating skill at the same time. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi describes this moment as “being completely involved in an activity for its own sake. The ego falls away. Time flies. Every action, movement, and thought follows inevitably from the previous one, like playing jazz. Your whole being is involved, and you’re using your skills to the utmost.” In his book Flow: The Psychology of Optimal Experience, he describes it using an image I’ve redrawn on the following page:

6. 2-Minute Meditations

A research team from Massachusetts General Hospital looked at brain scans of people before and after they participated in a course on mindfulness meditation and published the results in Psychiatry Research. What happened? After the course, parts of the brain as- sociated with compassion and self-awareness grew while parts as- sociated with stress shrank. Studies report that meditation can “permanently rewire” your brain to raise levels of happiness.

7. Five Gratitudes

If you can be happy with simple things, then it will be simple to be happy. Find a book or a journal, or start a website, and write down three to five things you’re grateful for from the past week. I wrote five a week on 1000awesomethings.com. Some people write in a notebook by their bedside. Back in 2003, researchers Robert Emmons and Michael McCullough asked groups of students towrite down five gratitudes, five hassles, or five events that hap- pened over the past week for ten straight weeks. Guess what hap- pened? The students who wrote five gratitudes were happier and physically healthier. Charles Dickens puts this well: “Reflect upon your present blessings, of which every man has many, not your past misfortunes, of which all men have some.”
Those are the Big 7. You know it’s important to be happy first, and these are the seven ways to get there. Remember: Just like driving a car, throwing a football, or doing a headstand—you can learn to be happier.

The Happiness Formula
By John Chancellor
Happiness seems to be a universal desire. But it also seems very elusive – like the Holy Grail – lots of people searching but few really finding happiness.

Neil Pasricha, author of The Happiness Equation, has given some excellent tips for finding more happiness in life. The book is well written and interesting to read. And it contains some excellent tips that will help you toward your goal of happiness.

Mr. Pasricha starts by explaining why it is so difficult to suppress negative thoughts. He shares an interesting observation – for 99% of the time humans have existed, the primary focus was survival. Our conditioning is to constantly be on the lookout for danger. Our survival depended on it. It is only in the last few hundred years that we have started to look for happiness.

I’ve read hundreds of self-help books. While many of points Mr. Pasricha makes are not new, he does approach many of these topics from a fresh perspective. I really love some of the simple but powerful points he makes.

1. To avoid all criticism, set only goals that matter to you. Give up external goals – material or achievements that are outside and focus only on internal goals.
2. Always have a high opinion of yourself. Keep in mind the words of the Buddha, “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire universe, deserve your love and affection.”
3. The average world income is $5,000 per year. You have already won the lottery.
4. Never retire. Always be doing something useful.
5. How to prioritize anything in life

There are very meaningful quotes at the beginning of each chapter. In addition, there are a lot of hand drawn “scribbles” scattered throughout the book. These are used to illustrate the points he is making. I really like his down to earth approach with these scribbles.

The book contains a lot of great information and basic truths about what it takes to be happy. We don’t need to complicate life or the search for happiness. Happiness is often so elusive because we are chasing the wrong things in life. This book is a great reminder of what is important.

Follow the advice in this book and you will greatly improve your outlook on life and your happiness index will soar.

Best New Book On Living Intentionally
By O. Merce Brown
*****
I just finished reading The Happiness Equation and feel changed overall--in a very good way--as though my life and my motivation has had a chiropractic adjustment.

I've not read the author's other books, but based on the cover and the stunning endorsements this book received, I was intrigued; I am vitally interested in personal transformation (I am a life coach) but I wondered what anyone could bring to the burgeoning field of happiness philosophies and the writings of a multitude of thought leaders. It turns out, this author brought a great deal. If you are interested in living intentionally, I highly recommend this book.

It has an index! At the same time this book is an entertaining read and not academic at all. It is illustrated with fun, hand-drawn, napkin-type lists and drawings that help the reader understand the key concepts. The 9 "secrets" are conveyed and "taught" to the reader in a fun way so that you learn to remember them as code for what the author means. For example, Secret #3--"Remember the Lottery" will not mean much to you if you haven't read the book, but if you have, you know that this meme stands for an important life principle--that of realizing what you have and that it truly, truly is ENOUGH. Yes, you've heard this before, but in this book, it is presented in an original and penetrating way so that you "get" it differently, better. I think I can integrate it into my life and USE it, REMEMBER it. The different secrets distill and represent many of the current happiness studies and the wisdom of the ages, organizing them in one place pragmatically, attractively, and in an original presentation.

At the end of each chapter, the previous secrets are repeated graphically (with the hand-drawn list) so that you can integrate what you've learned. I really like the author's method of teaching; it reminds me of a college blackboard lecture that you look forward to because you're going to learn so much and feel so energized afterwards. I also really like that there are 9 secrets--9, not 10. 10 secrets would have made the book inauthentic and weird and one secret would have been blas. As such, the secrets are rich and fresh. I wanted an impetus for my personal growth, happiness, and mindfulness--and I found it here.

Some of the secrets are things I already knew but I liked how they were presented here. On the other hand, some of the secrets were new to me. Secret #6 ("The Secret To Never Being Too Busy Again") meant the most to me. The chapter hit me as "How to stop being too busy when you've tried everything else" and I learned so many things, the most important being how and why I need to restrict access to my time and attention in order to be creative and productive. This was life-changing and I've already begun to implement it.

Someone--and endorser or a reviewer--said to keep this book in your bathroom to refer to often--and as odd as of idea as that sounds, that's exactly what I'm going to do. I don't want to forget or blank out on what I've gained from reading this book! If you are at all interested in living intentionally, this will be your new favorite book.

Highly recommended.

Equation doesn't add up
By JoAnne Goldberg
The goals of the Happiness Equation are listed on the cover: want nothing (be content with what you've got) and do anything (enjoy your freedom) to have everything, which theoretically is happiness, but that sometimes becomes muddled with wealth and fame. The book is a compendium of tips that you have heard before, illustrated with scores of the quadrant matrix popularized by BCG. Apparently the matrix is the one tool that Pasricha retained from his MBA days, to which he alludes more often than is necessary. In fact, the H-bomb is dropped at least once a chapter.

Pasricha's secrets to happiness run the gamut from merely trite to facile to downright irritating. Accept yourself (to illustrate this "secret," he explains that he has learned how best to inform people about his Harvard pedigree). Have a goal. Do not retire; Pasricha is militant about this! In his worldview, people with regular 9-5 jobs lead fulfilling and social lives; once they retire from those jobs they turn into vegetables and probably die within minutes. The exception appears to be Harvard MBAs, who work too hard. He has no solution for them, but advises people only to do work they love. (Some people don't get a chance to do the work they love until they retire from their day jobs, but self-fulfillment outside the workplace is not a topic you'll see addressed here.)

Another pet peeve of Pasricha is making decisions, and he cites an exhausting and expensive shopping trip to prove his point. He suggests creating rules for your life so you have to make as few decisions as possible, including wearing black every day to save time spent on choosing outfits. He stops short of advising readers to read the same book every night, vacation at the same resort every year, or consume Soylent at every meal, but maybe he doesn't realize how time-consuming those decisions can be. (It takes way longer to stand in the checkout line at the grocery than to pull something out of the closet to wear, never mind having to cook!)

More secrets: set priorities, including time limits for meetings, and just do it! (Credit given to Nike.) Most importantly, be yourself.

There you go. I just saved you an hour+ of your life and some money, both of which you can invest in a better book.
