Discovered by aviators in 1931, Jawa's ruins were only recently excavated. Strangely, the harsh environment has protected the city - no settlement was ever built upon Jawa's ruins - making it the best preserved Bronze Age city yet known. Helms was director of excavation at the twenty-two acre site.

This study was done without the now available help of the modern Remote Sensing and Geographic Information System - Helms and collaborators are presenting here a fascinating account with numerous drawings, hypothesis - possible explanation of the life-support systems with details of (the possible) material requirement and labour-time to build and maintain the water harvesting structures at Jawa in the black basalt desert of North-Eastern present Jordan- a unique contribution to understanding how water harvesting techniques work in the desert ! a "must read" for all people working these days on water harvesting techniques and desert development.

The Barbican is one of London's landmarks and Britain's largest listed buildings, yet its architects, Chamberlin, Powell and Bon (CPB), are little-known today. Their leader, Peter (Joe) Chamberlin, died young and little of their archive survives. But detective work has revealed a complex story about three determined characters and a surprising variety of fascinating architecture. Chamberlin worked on the Festival of Britain, but the practice was formed only in 1952 when Geoffry Powell won a housing competition in London. The resulting Golden Lane Estate is as light and brightly-coloured as the adjoining Barbican that followed is monumental. In between, the firm produced a range of buildings that pushed concrete technology to its limits, including houses and schools, Murray Edwards College (New Hall) in Cambridge, and major extensions to Leeds University. These projects are beginning to be recognised as among the best buildings of the 1960s; this book explains how they happened. The author, Elain Harwood, is a historian with English Heritage specialising in post-war architecture, and has researched the work of Chamberlin, Powell and Bon for many years, initially to secure the listing of the best examples. The book is illustrated with images from CPB's rediscovered archive and specially commissioned colour photography by James O. Davies, and is an essential read for architects, students, architectural historians and anyone who is interested in learning more about a key practice in British post-war architecture. This book has been commissioned as part of a series of books on Twentieth Century Architects by RIBA Publishing, English Heritage and The Twentieth Century Society.

Epiphany

When I was a small boy living in London over 25 years ago, my father used to take me to the Science Museum in South Kensington almost every Saturday to attend the afternoon lectures. One Saturday it was not a lecture that we attended but a film by a gentleman named Jacob Bronowski. I sat mesmorised by the episode of the 'Ascent of Man' that was shown that afternoon. I understood much of the science which was being discussed and already had a good grounding in the subject. But within the despcription of man's pursuit of understanding was a humanity that I had never experienced before. At the end of the film, Bronowski crouched by a pond in a concentration camp and scooped a handful of ashes from the pool of water and, fixing his steady eye on the camera, said, 'I beseech you in the bowels of Christ, consider you may be wrong'. Bronowski was quoting Cromwell, but in that brief moment was encapsulated the escence of science, humanity, art,and understanding. The Ascent of Man, in the 1970s an attempt to bring a deeper and wider understanding of science and humanity to the public, is now confined to Open University television schedules. The book remains available to all. It is a revelation. Bronowski was a giant. Read this book and you may come closer to an understanding of the world around you, but when you finally put it down, having formed an opinion,'consider you may be wrong'. As for me, I went on to study physics as a first degree and the arts as a higher degree. I share Bronowski's atheism but there is never a day that passes or an opinion I offer when I do not heed that advice and question the world around me.

Evolution of knowledge

One of my all time favorite books from college that is definitely a keeper and still relevent after all these years. If you read each chapter and view the corresponding video text it produce sa truly amazing insight into the development of mankinds knowledge. Similiar in style to "Connections" it is quite possibly more engrossing. The book is a fascinating journey , written in a style that illuminates the darkest and distant passages of time with lucidity and foresight. My personal favorite chapter(6) was The Starry Messenger which was eventually about(like knowledge Bronowski builds on the past) Galileo and his relationship with the Catholic Church as a result of his theories.I love this book and the understanding it gave me to subjects I felt less than interested in. This book has the power to make even the most abstract and esoteric theories interesting. A beautiful book that puts all the knowledge of the past into perspective in an entertaining manner that can lead a young mind into areas of interest they may never have persued. The book is also full of richly detailed photographs, full color prints and other visual aids that further explain the topic duscussed.I would recommened this book for any young student in high school or approaching college who is even remotely interested in the connections between science and the evolution of mankind. A great gift idea for that budding scientist or historian on your list.

An Outstanding and Important Book

Jacob Bronowski was a genuine Renaissance man. This, his most famous book, looks at the history of science from the perspective of Bronowski's deep, humanist philosophy. Bronowski--along with C.P. Snow--saw art and science as two aspects of the same human enterprise: that of understanding the world and expressing that world in human terms. Here Bronowski shows those connections: why Mendeleev's periodic table was part of "the greatest collective work of art" in history--that is, physics; why the Watts Towers of Los Angeles are like the molecules in a copper wire. THE ASCENT OF MAN is a symphony for which SCIENCE AND HUMAN VALUES was merely a prelude. An outstanding, and vitally important book. "I am infinitely saddened," Bronowski writes, "to find myself suddenly surrounded in the West by a terrible loss of nerve." We must not turn our backs on science--we must finally discover it. One of those writers whose every page contains a brilliant idea, Bronowksi is well worth reading. I anticipated that Numerology would be a well-written, user-friendly book. I am pleased to announce that Dudley's latest book exceeded my expectations in every respect. It is especially noteworthy that the author's practice of summarizing the history of each topic that he discusses is carried over to this book. .Some chapters that contain very little mathematics are...fascinating. The chapters on Pythagoreanism and the ones on gematria, that is the art and science of assigning numbers to letters and thus to words, are in this category. The chapters on the history of numerology, the role of sevens in the Bible, books on numerology, and the chapter on round numbers are also nonmathematical, but well worth reading. In conclusion, the book is a delight - one that you will be glad to have read, but sorry to have finished. -- The Mathematics Teacher

About the Author
Underwood Dudley received his PhD from the University of Michigan in 1965 and taught briefly at Ohio State University before accepting a position at DePauw University where he has taught since 1967. He has been active in the publications program of The Mathematical Association of America (MAA) for over fifteen years as an Associate Editor of Mathematics Magazine,. Editor of the College Mathematics Journal, Collaborating Editor of the Problem Section of the American Mathematical Monthly, and Chair of the Editorial Board of the New Mathematical Library.

His other publications include Mathematical Cranks, The Trisectors, and Readings for Calculus published by the MAA, as well as Elementary Number Theory published by W. H. Freeman.

Great, but non-math majors might get lost

Dudley Underwood's book attempts to debunk both New Age and quasi-Christian use of numerology. He succeeds to an amazing degree.
Particularly good is his treatment of 666 (the mysterious number of the Beast in Rev. 13:18, which in league with most biblical scholars, I believe had meaning for the original readers of 1900 years ago). Professor Underwood shows that 666 is no more of a threat to us than 13, broken mirrors, or black cats.
This book is not for the mathematically uninitiated, however. Underwood writes as if he assumes all his readers know more about math than Isaac Newton and Plato combined. If you can get past the esoterica, you'll enjoy this book. . . and maybe be saved from the crackpot sheisters too.

This is an excellent counterargument against numerology.

Contrary to the opinions of many misguided souls, numbers do not have personalities. In yet another of his excellent attempts to overcome silliness in the name of mathematics, Underwood Dudley presents a reasonably strong case against numerology. The problem is that the case is strong only if you are reasonable. I applaud him for pointing out the absurdity of numerology, although few minds will be changed as a consequence of reading this book.

This is a great book for motivation

I think this book is one of the best motivational books I have ever read. Anytime I am feeling down or stressed I can look at this book for a few minutes and I feel like I can go out and conquer the world. I am often wondering what is the true meaning of life and this book helps answer that question. I highly recomend this book for anyone who enjoys uplifting life quotes or self-help books.

This text covers a wide variety of mental health issues, It is used in the class I assist in teaching, I find it helpful and my students find it helpfu. It is easy reading and includes helpful nursing interventions. I would not buy another textbook in the kindle verson though, because I can't access the additional information.
