I didn't have an option when I bought this book because I needed it for class. However, I am glad this book was chosen. The cases are short and to the point. The authors did a great job cutting out the fluff.

Philosophical fun

I got this book because I haven't read Plato in a while and I wanted a convenient volume that I could keep by the bedside. It would be good for me, I decided, to read a dialogue each night before bed. Who knows, maybe I would even dream of Socrates. When I am not reading it, the 1800-page volume can also serve as a sturdy little bedside table, a handsome place to put your tea and biscuits. (If you don't mind setting your cup of tea on the cornerstone of western civilisation.)

It has been a delight to rediscover the dialogues in these elegant contemporary translations, and a surprise to discover so many additional works that I had never seen before. The publisher's workmanship is beautiful too, with quality paper, good cloth binding, and attractive typesetting with generous margins. I like to have room on the page to scribble my own impertinent replies to Socrates, and to ask him questions that he always affably refuses to answer.

Yesterday I had left the book open in the middle of Alcibiades. When I came back into the room one of my children was reading it. "What's this?" she said. "A novel, or a collection of stories?"

"It's philosophy," I said.

"Philosophy!" She was stunned. "I never knew philosophy was so funny."

It is a testament to the quality of these translations that a child could mistake Plato for a novelist; that she could read him without having the faintest idea that it was Serious Business; and that her first response to Plato's Socrates was laughter.

Plato made easy. Buy it!

Using solely simple English and understandable terms, in the style which the texts were originally composed by Plato himself, the translators and editors of this Hackett version of Plato successfully brought the classics of paramount significance in western civilization to curious and studious readers in the modern era. What else can I say? Just buy it! Surely you won't regret.

Pros
1) Beautiful hard cover for collectors. (Well, if you really desire the insights of Plato, you should make the book as dirty as possible after you read it, raping it with your markers and margin notes.)
2) The style of writing: as I mentioned in the introductory part of this review.
3) Full Stephanus pagination is provided throughout the entire work, making it extremely convenient to the readers for scholarly research, and discussion/comparison with other people.
4) Introductory passages, to both the way you should study Plato in the beginning chapters of the book, and before each of Plato's dialogues, helping the reader to get a grand picture at first, so that you can decide, after you read the introduction, that if you really need to read the dialogues. However, I'd suggest you read all his works in its entirety, at least those that are generally agreed by scholars to be Plato's genuine work.

Cons
The only issue of this great thing is of course the quality of its printing. The pages are very thin, like the kind of paper used in printing dictionaries and the bible. As regards this aspect, I'd prefer the polished paper used in Cambridge classics. Font size (approximately 11 pt serif font) is okay for youngsters, but I would suggest the elderly to get magnifying glasses for reading this.

Review of Plato: Complete Works

I got this edition of Plato's Works back in March, as I wanted, not only a TRULY COMPLETE edition of Plato, but modern translations as well. I have an MA in History, but one of my BA's is in Philosophy, with an emphasis in Early Western and Scholastic Philosophy. Over the years since, I have read many philosophers, from Plato, to Marx, to Mao, and many more.

But ultimately, it ALL goes back to Plato. As Alfred North Whitehead said, all philosophy AFTER Plato was and is footnotes to him. And one cannot argue that Plato was to Western Civilisation every bit as important as Moses, and the other Biblical writers, and possibly moreso.

This particular book is well-bound, with a dust jacket. I got it from a private seller at Amazon, and if memory serves it was listed as VERY GOOD condition, which it is in fact. There is some minor underlining at the beginning of the text, but that is all. Buying this book hard-copy for US$35 is a steal.

Back to the content. These are all modern translations. I am used to the Jowett translations, which are all VERY dry. These are much easier to read. My knowledge of Greek is extremely limited, and even then mostly New Testament Greek, which is an entirely different dialect, for lack of a better word, than what Plato used.

My personal recommendation is that, if you are reading merely for basic knowledge, use this text. If you are a true scholar of Plato (as I fancy myself to be), STILL use this text, as well as other translations, including Jowett, for comparison. Better yet, learn the original Greek!

For those of us who cannot learn Greek at this time, this book is a jewel. It contains EVERYTHING, either written by Plato, or thought to be, or that even came to us under his name, spuriously so. It is THE MOST COMPLETE edition out there.

Plato is the real deal. Reading him will set you to truly understand the human condition. There is no one, not Aristotle, not Moses, and I would dare to say, not even Jesus (and I say that as a Christian!), who can impart the kind of knowledge that Plato can. One who does not read him cannot be said to be any kind of scholar. In fact, if I may be so bold, I would say that reading Plato is necessary to even be truly human.

In sum, I encourage EVERY PERSON who is literate to read this book. In fact, it SHOULD be required reading in EVERY high school across the land. The only reason it isn't is because, as a previous reviewer noted, the government (which controls the curriculum in our schools) would be terrified of people actually learning to THINK for themselves.

Zipes (German, Univ. of Minnesota), well known in storytelling and folklore circles for such works as Fairy Tales and the Art of Subversion (Routledge, 1985), confronts in this series of essays the question much discussed recently on listservs: How have the relatively new media of film and television affected traditional storytelling and stories, particularly fairy tales? Zipes is concerned with the "commodification" of fairy tales, a la Disney, where the films are designed more to sell a line of toys and other products than to present a story to an audience. Zipes traces the use of fairy tales in the acculturation process through various time periods, emphasizing the importance of being cognizant of the process itself. The beginning of an important discussion, his work is recommended for academic libraries and public libraries with substantial collections in either folklore or media studies.?Katherine K. Helpful and Intriguing View of Tales and Culture

I really disagree with the previous review of this book. Zipes doesn't distort the tales meaning at all. Instead he avoids the facile, obvious surface reading, and goes deeper into the many varied meanings of what any one tale can mean. I especially enjoyed the sections on how tales were twisted and edited to reinforce our ideas of childhood and what is appropriate for children to read. For instance, the Grimms' tales were heavily edited over time making them less violent, adding in strict moral messages, and generally making the female characters more annoying (see Bottigheimer's Grimms Bold Boys and Bad Girls for a great analysis of this). I highly reccomend this book.

Food for thought

I definitely didn't agree with a lot of what Zipes had to say - he was much too pessimistic and bitter for my tastes. Additionally, the idea of Disney-as-embodiment-of-all-things-evil is a little tired.

However, what I enjoyed about the book was how much it got me thinking about my own views on the material. Quite a few times I wished Zipes was in front of me so we could discuss and debate. That is always a sign of a good book to me - something that gets me thinking about my own belief system, whether I agree with the author or not.

Derailed By Value Judgements

From what I gather, Zipes is a fairly prolific scholar writer in the field of fairy tale studies. The first half of the book I found deeply engaging as he did a bit of comparative study of the evolution of fairy tales prior to the 20th century. He concentrated specifically on the cultural values of specific historic periods that are reflected within each version, and how as these values change over time so do the stories. And within this framework, he also investigated how fairy tales have been used to socialize children. However, the latter part of the work began to read a bit too much like a manifesto against the consumerist monoculture--which wasn't what I was looking for. Analysis of how fairy tales rationalize the abandonment and abuse of children? Fun! Sweeping value judgements and generalizations about contemporary society and consumerist culture? Not quite what I was expecting. (Granted, the subtitle does talk about "the culture industry" but the last chapter was pretty exclusively discussing the culture industry, with very little reference to fairy tales).
