One of L'Amour's best

Fallon is the best Louis L'Amour book I have read. It contains several shootouts, brawls, and poker games in addition to other exciting plot elements. Fallon also introduces some of L'Amour's best characters and zings the reader with an unexpected twist in the climax. It is truly a must-read for anyone who enjoys westerns!

Fallon is a Remarkable Book!

With Fallon Louis L'Amour comes up with a very different main character. Fallon isn't a gunfighter or cattleman; he's a gambler and a complicated individual. I've read a great many excellent books by Louis L'Amour, and have enjoyed all of them but to be honest, they are uneven. By this I mean that some of them are much better than others.

Fallon is one that I flat out loved; one that I remember well, and of all of L'Amour's always fun to read Westerns, I think Fallon is one of the best.

I can't believe this is the first western I have read - its great!

I can't believe this was the first western I ever read, I'll defintely search out more. This is good fun right from the first paragraphs "Macon Fallon was a stranger to Seven Pines, and fortunately he was a stranger with a fast horse" - from the opening lines I was carried along.

The story follows Macon Fallon, as you know from the above, a stranger to Seven Pines who manages to upset some gamblers and escapes from the lynching - but gets himself in a bad way travelling in the dry areas without water. Just in time he sees a small wagon train and hatches a plan. There is a deserted town up behind the trail, he realises if he can get the wagoners to set up the town again he can make a pile and start a new life out west. It is kind of a scam, but he feels some guilt, they are decent people and he doesn't swindle decent people.

The hero is good fun, at once self-deprecating good humour, and next strong and able hero to the wagoners and against the local unsavoury and highly violent gang. One of the Wagoners, Ginia, an attractive young woman, smart and brave.

the story bounded along, its a short and punchy novel, the only thing I found I disliked was the long discussion of poker hands. The hero and the writing reminded me strongly of Lee Child and I wondered if Child was a L'amour fan - maybe I need to read more of this sort of stuff.

Loved it, will read more of Louis L'amour's books.

The end is getting closer, but has not yet arrived, in this fourth entry in the TUNNELS series. It all started with Will and Chester digging tunnels, trying to find Will's missing archaeologist father. After digging DEEPER and experiencing FREEFALL into the subterranean depths of the Earth in books two and three, the two boys continue to battle the malevolent Styx, and to survive in book four—but in different arenas. Chester joins Drake and a possible Styx ally on the surface, while Will, his father, and Elliott (the girl Drake trained to fight) encounter pyramids and a World War II German Army deep in the bowels of the Earth. The Styx are hot on their trail because the teens stole the virus created to destroy all humans. There is tragedy and triumph as the action switches back and forth, following the adventures of both sets of characters. This novel begins with a bang, and the pace never falters. There is very little background information, so newcomers should start with Tunnels. But fans of the series are going to have a hard time putting it down. There is a lot of action; lively dialogue; diabolical villains and feisty teens; clever cat-like companion hunters; things that blow up; torture and mind manipulation; family and friends in danger; and trust and betrayal. Nonstop adventure--looking forward to more

In CLOSER, three of our heroes are stranded in a strange world called the "Land of the Second Sun," which is located at the very center of the earth. But none of them are overly concerned with their predicament. In fact, they all feel relatively safe and even satisfied with their circumstances. In the case of Dr. Burrows, he is ecstatic to discover a new world to study and spends his hours crawling over the bizarre pyramids, recording everything in his journal. His son, Will, is happy to help, grateful to be with him and even more thankful to spend some time alone with Elliot as she scouts out the area, finding food and shelter.

However, their peace is about to end. Another group of people call this place home: Germans who sought a safe refuge during WWII and who have successfully created a new civilization called New Germania. But even they aren't the real threat to Will and company; that comes when the evil Rebecca twins finally catch up to our heroes. They are desperate to recover the vial of the nasty virus that Will and Elliot had stolen, and they will do anything --- even murder --- to get what they want.

Will's best friend, Chester, finally reaches the earth's surface again, along with Martha, the strange, somewhat unstable woman they had encountered in the depths. Chester is eager to ditch her and finally get back home to let his parents know he's okay. But Martha has developed an attachment to Chester and isn't about to let him go. The "warped, psycho granny," as Chester calls her, locks him in the closet of an abandoned house and has no intentions of ever losing him. Chester can only think of one way out of his nightmarish situation: try to get a signal to Drake.

Meanwhile, Drake has been rescued from almost certain death by a former Limiter who claims to be Elliot's father. He proposes to help Drake in exchange for assistance in getting Elliot back safe and sound. Drake has enough experience in the espionage games to know not to trust anybody, but with Eddy's help, Drake could put an end to the Styx plans of creating new viruses they want to use on the surface population in order to take over the entire world, inside and out. Dare Drake trust a former enemy? Dare he not?

This fourth installment of the Tunnels series is smoking! With our heroes split up into different parts of the globe (both inside and out), CLOSER is almost like many separate stories interwoven into one big book (and it is big at over 500 pages). The point of view is constantly switching among Will, Chester, Drake and others as they all battle their own exciting circumstances, which keeps the story fresh and renewed with plenty of cliffhangers to propel the pages. Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams offer lots of espionage, military-type tactics and weaponry, airplanes, helicopters and motorcycles, a wonderful sense of imagination, and even brief flaunts of humor. Their characters are interesting and well-rounded, displaying both faults and feelings along with bouts of heroism. The authors also do a tremendous job comparing different cultures and governments, which is one of the book's themes.

Gordon and Williams have two more books planned for the series, with the next one titled SPIRAL. So the end is near, but there are still mega amounts of pages to enjoy in the meantime. CLOSER offers a nonstop, subterranean adventure with a steady supply of surprises and suspense.

A different ending

I love this series- great for kids. This book keeps you interested the whole way through with a great plot, action scenes and many different story lines. The ending of the book left me a little disappointed. I am not sure if the series will continue, but I was hoping for a better closing to all the story lines.

Good book. Lots of twists and turns. The valley of the second Sun and the hollow earth theory were especially interesting. The underground WWII era German city they stumbled upon was very imaginative. Best book in the series yet by far.

But this solution raises a question: Why is it so important for Paul that gentiles become seed of Abraham? The argument of this book is that Paul believes that God had made certain promises to Abraham that only those who are his seed could enjoy and that these promises can be summarized as being empowered to live a moral life, inheriting the cosmos, and having the hope of an indestructible life.

About the Author

About the Author

Omer Bartov is the John P. Birkelund Distinguished Professor of European History and Professor of History and German Studies at Brown University and has written on the Holocaust, Nazi Germany and modern genocide. His books include Erased: Vanishing Traces of Jewish Galicia in Present-Day Ukraine (2007), Germany's War and the Holocaust: Disputed Histories (2003) and Mirrors of Destruction: War, Genocide and Modern Identity (2000).

Superb collection for classroom use

It would be hard to imagine a better, and certainly a more up-to-date, introduction to the Jewish holocaust and the scholarly controversies it has engendered. Omer Bartov, whose research on the role of the Wehrmacht (German army) in Nazi crimes has helped to shatter many comfortable myths about that key institution, here presents a selection of the best and most searching writings on the holocaust. The selections range from Raul Hilberg's analysis of European anti-Semitism (a reminder that many scholars had isolated this as key to the Nazis' policies long before Daniel Goldhagen made his "discoveries" in "Hitler's Willing Executioners"), to a meditation by Alan Finkielkraut on the Klaus Barbie trial and the notion of "crimes against humanity." Sandwiched in between is a fine overview of the functionalist/intentionalist controversy in holocaust scholarship (the debate over whether the holocaust was primarily the willed result of Hitler and other Nazi ideologues' hatred of the Jews, or an unplanned consequence of war, demographic policy, internecine rivalries, and bureaucratic momentum). Bartov has selected the essays with great sensitivity, and provided brief introductions to place them in scholarly, historical, and human context. A bonus is the inclusion of Primo Levi's unforgettable essay "The Gray Zone," which explores the politically-charged issue of Jews' coerced collaboration with the forces of mass murder. This book is ideal for introductory classes on the holocaust or genocide in general, and as a primer for those who want to find their feet in the scholarly debate, which shows no signs of waning.

A new book is about to be released by Dr Howard Thomas Brady called - Mirrors and Mazes: a guide to the climate debate.

In Australia there are two easy-to-read shorter books showing very different sides of the climate debate. One was Tim Flannery’s - The Weather Makers - published in 2005. The other is this new book by Dr Howard Thomas Brady.

This is indeed one of those rare book on climate: it is a concise and clear reader, while also profoundly rich in its concepts, analysis and scope, addressing the critical issues in the climate debate. There are no distracting emotional attacks on individuals. There is humour. There are some interesting stories. There are straightforward analyses of questions we all ask: Is sea level rising? Are the Poles melting? Are storms getting worse? Are temperatures rising? How do climate models work? What about future climate shocks?

Dr Brady questions the panic in the climate debate. His underlying theme is that the sensitivity of the world’s climate system has been overstated by climate models that multiply the greenhouse effect of carbon dioxide three times due to the effects of clouds and water vapour.

Dr Brady is an Australian who was an Antarctic scientist years ago. He was on four expeditions to Antarctica with the US Office of Polar Programs. His Masters of Science and PhD theses were on the past geological history of Antarctica. As recently as 2011, an American university presented him with its 2011 Alumnus Scientist of the Year Award for his contributions to climate research; a rare award for an Australian.

The public should look forward to this great book that will be available in late February.

This is a great book. I needed a clear overview of the climate debate - there are very few around - and this book was recommended to me by a scientist as one of the best books I could read on the subject…he was right!

Very well-thought out and superb diagrams

I can only repeat what others have said: this book is the most readable book on climate I have ever read. It appeared without fanfare, but once better known, it will be around for a long time due its content and its unique literary style.

The title is apt - trying to understand climate can often feel like walking through a hall of distorted mirrors and being lost in a maze.

A lot of thought has gone into this book - the title, the chapter order and the diagrams, which are gorgeous. Most books on climate have diagrams with some crude explanations that are usually in fine print. In this book, each diagram has a explanation walking you through what the diagram means. Each diagram becomes a story in its own right without reference to the text.

I was also impressed by the scope of the references. And when the author quotes other scientists he carefully tells the reader where they work and are from. I liked this as it showed how scientists in many countries have contributed to our understanding of climate.

I rarely do this, but I intend to buy more copies of this book as a gift to some of my friends interested in the climate debate.
