A good friend introduced me to Jean Mansfield’s books and videos several years ago. Much as I adore cooking, I never considered making cheese until Jean showed me the fun I’d been missing. With her skillful guidance, I quickly found myself wholly smitten with this ancient art.

Once content to buy cheese from my local fromagerie, more often than not I find myself reaching for Jean’s recipes and tips for culinary inspiration. Her handy checklist and step-by-step instruction instill confidence amongst the most reticent fromag�re.

This book is as close as you can get to having a master cheesemaker in the kitchen with you. Jean has thought of everything the novice and skilled cheesemaker needs to know. She offers the practical advice only someone with decades of hands-on-experience can impart. I especially appreciate her chapter on “What Went Wrong.” All cookery books should have a section like this but they never do. Knowing what can go wrong helps us avoid some of the common pitfalls encountered when mastering a new skill.

Buy this book!

My five grandchildren were coming for a week-long visit, so I ordered this book to get ideas for fun things to do with them. We had a great time doing some of the experiments, and I really appreciated the clear directions and illustrations. The children range in age from 20 months to nine years, so I didn't spend a lot of time explaining the scientific principles, but I did let the kids do as much as they could for each experiment. We started with the Ivory soap in the microwave; the kids were amazed! Then we polished pennies with vinegar and salt; that was ok. They loved the density experiment with layers of colored liquids (we did the one you can drink)! We had fun with the balloon rockets on a string (we tied it to the top of our deck and sent the rockets up from the yard). The grand finale was the Diet Coke and Mento rocket - so much fun, although I told the kids they had to keep watching since it's over quickly. My husband took lots of photos of our experiments and a video of the Diet Coke rocket so we could watch it again. Next time the grandkids visit we'll try some more ideas from this great book!

Fantastic book for as young as 3 years old

This book is great! I've already done a handful of these experiments with my 3 year old and we've had so much fun. He seems to have grasped the basic concept of decomposition through the Banana Balloon experiment and density through the Floating Grape experiment. Some of these we'll set aside for later on, but a good number of them are simple enough (taking 15 minutes or less) to hold a little kid's attention and interest. Most of the things you need to pull these off are items already around the house. Just awesome.

Great fun for Dad's and Mom's

Just received this book a few days ago and while I have yet to try the experiments with my daughter I would say that the title is deceiving. I could see my wife having just as much fun trying some of these experiments as well.

Many of these experiments made me think "Wow, I can't believe how simple and awesome that is!"

Good supplementary material for any linguistics course. Or for a lot of them, probably.

I bought this along with the main textbook to brush up on the basics before starting a new linguistics program and I am so glad I did. While I use a different textbook for class, this is nice to have around for additional practice exercises.
If you are studying linguistics on your own and are thinking of getting this, you probably should. And while you don't NEED the main text to complete most of the work in here, it's a pretty good text and you might as well just get both. Live a little.

Myron Moskovitz is a native San Franciscan who received his law degree (with honors) from the University of California in Berkeley in 1964. Since then, he has served as the Chief Attorney of the National Housing Law Project in Berkeley and Chairman of the States Commission on Housing and Community Development. Co-author of California Tenants' Rights, he has written many articles on tenants rights, and won several important cases establishing new rights for tenants. Ralph Warner is a co-founder of Nolo Press and one of the pioneers of the self-help law movement. A graduate of Princeton University and the Boalt School of Law (U.C. Berkeley), he is the author of many books and articles aimed at making our legal system more accessible and democratic.

About the Author
As Nolo's managing editor, Portman oversees editorial work on all Nolo books. She specializes in residential and commercial landlord/tenant law, legal issues related to courts, landlords and tenants, and neighbor disputes. She is the author or co-author of Every Landlord's Legal Guide, Every Landlord's Guide to Finding Great Tenants, Every Tenant's Legal Guide, Renters' Rights, Negotiate the Best Lease for Your Business, Leases & Rental Agreements, The California Landlord's Law Book and California Tenants' Rights. Portman received undergraduate and graduate degrees from Stanford University and a law degree from Santa Clara University. Before joining Nolo in 1994, she practiced law as a public defender.

Yes, Even Tenants Have Rights!

Roof leaking? Sure, you can repair the problem and deduct it from your rent, but what if the landlord responds with an eviction notice? There is a lot of bad advice out there. Just because you CAN do something doesn't mean you SHOULD do something. Know your rights! This book will keep you on the right side of the law.

The book to have if your landlord is a jerk.

If your landlord is a jerk and you want to know what he (or she) can legally do or not do, this book will help. It will also give you some idea of when to go for professional help. It is of less help in figuring out what to do before you have to bring in the lawyers. I found it very helpfull to leave this book on the coffee table when my nosy landlord was snooping around my apartment. Apparently bad landlords don't like it when tenants know their rights.

California Tenants' Rights Book. Good, but it could be better.

We have actually been in the unfortunate position in the past of locking horns with a landlord over a dispute concerning repairs we wanted. We had looked up California law on the subject, and we had even consulted with our attorney on the matter. What we hadn't counted on, was that the landlord might just shrug their shoulders and agree that there was a problem, but they didn't agree with us to the extent/urgency of the problem, nor did they agree with some of the options the law said we had. California law said we had the right to go ahead and have the repairs made ourselves, giving us the option to pay for that, and then deduct the cost out of the rent. The landlord told us in no uncertain terms that if we do that, we would be evicted. Our attorney then told us that they had the deeper pockets, and while we were fighting the eviction we would be losing money in court, and have been blacklisted from renting anywhere else in town due to an eviction on our record. So, we folded and just put up with it.

I got this book hoping for tips on what one can REALLY do to actually fight that kind of situation. And they discuss those issues in chapters 6, 7 and 14, but not what to do if you really want to FIGHT for your rights. Our current landlord is actually very nice, and we are no longer in that sort of situation. But, it would still be nice to have the information. Unfortunately, that is exactly the kind of situation they send you to their website for, or tell you to hire an attorney for. So, why get the book?

Well, the book does cover ALL aspects of California Tenant Law. Of course, laws are updated pretty much yearly, so any law book is already close to being out of date on some issues almost as soon as it is printed. But, still, a lot of the core material is right at your finger tips, and sorted nicely. The chapters cover:

04. Discrimination
05. Privacy
06. Repairs and Maintenance (big)

So, there is a lot of information there. This could be a good gift for your 18-25 year old, or a refresher course for yourself, if you don't know all of the laws. However, if you are in a bad situation, and you want to fight, know that this book doesn't really help you with that. It only educates you on what you can fight about. For the actual process of fighting for your rights, it generally refers you to their website, or to hire an attorney. So, caveat emptor.

A Truly Great Linux Book.

This is a truly great book for any true beginner to Linux.

...The only thing it's missing, however, is a diagram of how the operating system is constructed: with a kernel as the base, with a shell on top, and then TTY's stacked on top of those, and so on. Any future editions of this book should include an engaging diagram and explanation of how the Linux OS -- and thus ANY OS -- is constructed.

But aside from that, it's the most enjoyable TRUE BEGINNER'S book on Linux I've yet to find.

Decent Book

This is a good book for someone interested in the basics of Linux. I special ordered it for one day delivery because I wanted to make sure that it arrived in new shape. Although it seemed to be packaged well and the box was in good condition there was a slice in the corner of the book, which clearly was from the box cutter used in the Amazon warehouse to open up the boxes containing books, which irritated me since it is an expensive book and the special shipping was chosen to help make sure that it arrived in new and not damaged condition.Linux Manual: Everything You Need to Get Started with Ubuntu Linux

O.K. FOR OUTDATED SYSTEMS

This book is a time sensitive manual. Linux systems basically update their formats every six months (aprox). This means that all of the explicit; commands, photographs and means of approach are null and void of useful info. The book however does give a few instances of help that may lead you in the right direction if you have a more recent system.
