When she isn't reading or writing sexy stories, she's probably singing, watching Game of Thrones and the Walking Dead, or dreaming of Michael Fassbender. Best Read of 2015! That's all.
By ~*Irene*~
This review is 100% spoiler-free.

A few things to consider before you decide to one-click this title:

1. if you are the kind of reader who can't separate real life from fiction, this book isn't for you
2.if your views on sex are strictly black and white, this book isn't for you
3. if you can't help but judge characters' actions as you would your own, this book isn't for you
4. if you use rose-colored glasses to view relationships between two people, either leave them off for this one or this book isn't for you

Moving on ...

I don't think I've ever done this before but I actually started writing my review [for this book] as I was reading it. I mean, I would read a few chapters then pause to write things down. Things this book made me feel. Things that simply blew my mind. Like exceptional writing. And how vivid and even poetic it is, considering the kind of story author tells.

I love how the story starts, immediately following the prologue, with the plan already in action. We didn't have to sit though 'who, where, why and when' but ended up in the middle of it all right away. That doesn't mean the author skipped out on any details because there are A LOT of details/info and not for one second was I bored with any of it! Everything has a purpose. Every story. Every detail. The present. The past. Everything.

Speaking of the past, I LOVE the way Laurelin gives the backstory of Emily and Amber. To me, it felt almost nostalgic ... learning what brought them together and made them go their separate ways, eventually. Some of the darker stuff that did happen in the past felt a bit easier to take as a story told years later. Don't get me wrong, it was still hard to read but, IMO, would have been MUCH harder if we had to endure it with the character in present time.

You can't talk about this book and not mention how sexy it is! To me, even though the sex IS present and SCORCHING, it doesn't take over the story. The fact that the author made me pay attention to things OTHER than sex only speaks volumes, considering the fact that sex IS the reason why so much 's*** hits the fan' in this book.

There are so many players, twists and turns that it will take you days to try and unravel the tangled web of deception Ms Paige weaved so masterfully! The questions you'll be asking yourself would be 'whodunnit?' and most importantly 'WHY???'

This book is meant be read with a reading partner. It will make it so much more fun and it's always nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of. I haven't had this many theories go through my head since ... EVER! TeriLyn and I exchanged HUNDREDS of messages while reading 'First Touch'.

This is erotic suspense at it's finest! Absolutely BRILLIANT! This book is a tie for BOOK OF THE YEAR [for me]! That's all. FIVE GLORIOUS stars! PERFECTION from start to finish! Can't wait for the sequel!!!

P.S. This is my first book by Laurelin Paige but it certainly won't be my last. She now has another fan for life!!

First Touch, 5 addictive stars
By Marieke
After reading First Touch I can honestly say the blurb doesn’t do the book any justice, it’s so much more, so many layers – dark cravings, dysfunctional friendships, coming to terms with one’s sexual needs. It’s written in the beautiful style I love Laurelin Paige’s books for, and for me it’s the perfect blend of suspense and the exploration of dark erotic desires.

“I only knew that she’d shown up in my dull, lackluster, impoverished world and she’d glistened. I was fascinated with her instantly. Awe-struck. Enamored. F**k, I was practically in love. I would have followed her anywhere. And I had. I’d followed her everywhere, through everything. Until, I couldn’t anymore.”

Emily Wayborn is a woman with a wild past, together with her best friend Amber she got involved with older rich men who provided for them; apartments, nice clothes, jewelry, all the luxurious things they wanted. After a brutal incident Emily is done with Amber and the life they are leading, she gets her act together and starts living a normal life in Hollywood. While leading her peaceful life Emily gets a voicemail from her former best friend – who turns out missing – using their old safe word. Emily goes after Amber’s last known lover, the charismatic and dangerous hotel entrepreneur Reeve Sallis, to find out what has happened with Amber. She knows he’s an attractive man, but she hasn’t counted on the sizzling chemistry between them.

“And I shivered. Because while I had ulterior motives for getting close to him, Reeve Sallis got to me. I’d read about his natural charm and sex appeal, but nothing had prepared me for the fullness of it in person. It was indescribable. Any adjective I tried to pin on him felt contrived and unoriginal. He was magnetic and provocative and commanding.”

Emily is a beautiful woman who knows how to use her body to get what she wants, after all, that’s how she and Amber got through life. While Amber was just interested in the fast lifestyle, the attention and wild parties, Emily had much darker needs. For reasons she didn’t understand, she allowed men to use her, to a point many other women would call it abuse. She didn’t even had a safe word, fully knowing she wouldn’t use it when necessary, to stop the dangerous situations she got herself into. This lack of self-preservation is partially what makes an end to her friendship with Amber.

Nowadays Emily keeps her dark urges under control, doesn’t put herself in situations where she will be hurt. Meeting Reeve changes everything. Although he is just means to an end, to gather information about Amber, Emily feels very attracted to the man. She wants to surrender to her inner cravings, and give herself over to him. After some push and pull between the couple, Reeve takes full control.

“They left bruises. They left scars. They were the men that induced fear. The men who debased and defiled. They were the reason I’d left that life in the first place And this was why, where Reeve Sallis was concerned, I was f**ked. Because these were the men that I could never stop craving.”

First Touch is a sensual, darker book with two storylines. On one side it’s about Emily’s search for her former best friend Amber, she just needs to know what has happened to her, and goes to great lengths to gather necessary information. On the other hand this is the story of Emily and Reeve, them meeting each other and circling around one other before they start an intense ‘arrangement’. An arrangement that involves Dominant/Submissive elements, craved by both Emily and Reeve. First Touch is told solely from Emily’s perspective, keeping Reeve an enigma with unknown motives and thoughts.

“The kind of man who looked like he could fight for a woman and win. He’d protect her from harm and then brutalize her himself but only just enough. Complete trust. Was that what love looked like? Was Reeve what love looked like?”

First Touch is the first book in ‘the First and Last duet’. I adore it and I can’t wait to read the next part, Last Kiss, to see if Emily and Reeve have a chance at a Happily Ever After. I give this story 5 stars.

Too intense and grim for me.

Premise: a lady with a wild-child history who is now a voiceover actress gets a mysterious message from her estranged friend and co-partier from back in the wild days. To find out what happened to her, she starts an affair with a possibly-murderous billionaire dude.

This is pretty dark and pretty Gothic. The people are not really like real people - everything is very heightened, very dramatic. People don't really respond the way real people would respond. If you like reading about your main character having sex with a man she is pretty sure doesn't care for her and suspects might want to murder her, THIS IS YOUR BOOK! If that sentence makes your eyebrows go up really high, it might not be for you.

Prose is pretty good, though. I couldn't get over the characterization (the book didn't sell me on it being plausible that people put up with some of what they put up with) but I think this is a reasonably good version of this type of dark/gothic sexy romance, if that's what you're into. For myself, it was too uncomfortable to be a fun reading experience. Again, if you like reading sex scenes where the heroine is not sure that she's going to survive the encounter, THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU! Otherwise, it might not be. Zero judgment either way from this reader - it's just quite a bit darker and edgier than I realized when I bought it, so my review is just for those like me who may not realize what they're getting into. For calibration, I find most prose in most contemporary romances fairly terrible (so "pretty good" is praise even if it sounds lukewarm). I like real characters with real problems and real emotional responses, I hate fluff and those series romances where all the characters from other books show up with their million babies. The first chunk of this book worked for me, but by the middle it was too dark. It's very noir, very dark, very Gothic- I didn't really find this to be "a romance" in the traditional sense. The relational dynamic between the two main characters involves a fair amount of humiliation, cruelty, aggressive jealousy, very little emotional or intellectual chemistry or even interaction, it's purely sexual. For some people, that's exactly what they want, for others, it isn't.
