Inspiring

I had never heard of Bertha Smith until after I met my wife. She would tell me about this retired missionary who lived in her home town that everyone called "Miss Bertha." Sadly, I never got to meet Miss Bertha because she passed away shortly after my wife and I were married. After hearing so much about Miss Bertha, I wanted to learn more.
Bertha's book, Go Home and Tell, and Lewis Drummond's book, Miss Bertha: Woman of Revival introduced me to this powerful woman of God.
Go Home and Tell gives inspiring details of how the great Shantung Revival broke out. Though many of the details were inspiring, the one that spoke the loudest to me was Bertha's confession of harboring ill will toward a fellow missionary. The incident revolved around a sickness that a missionary had and with no medicine or doctors available to treat the person, all the other missionaries gathered around her to pray for a miracle. As they prepared to lay hands on that missionary, Bertha was suddenly convicted of those ill feelings toward a missionary on the other side of the prayer circle. So she confessed it publically and was forgiven. That began a series of episodes in which various missionaries got right with God. Once they were pure of heart, then revival began to break out in the lives of the people they were serving.
The book also contained some powerful excerpts from Bertha's book, How the Spirit filled by Life, which is no longer in print.
Finally, the book included some letters that Bertha wrote from China. They show the joy and the struggle of both day to day life and the ministry she was involved in.
A powerful book that will change the lives of those who read it.
Sadly, too few people know the story of Bertha's life. When Bertha passed away, her home became a prayer retreat for a few years until financial problems forced it to close. Her possessions were auctioned off and I am proud to own one of three wooden chests that carried all her belongings back to America from China. The other two chests are owned by members of my wife's family. We also bought one of her end tables, which is still in one of our bedrooms. We consider these items treasures of a spiritual giant.

A faith building story of a dear old saint's walk with Jesus

This book will encourage and edify anyone seeking to walk in holiness before the Lord. Miss Bertha's account of God's amazing work in China is sure to bless anyone seeking the Lord Jesus with all their heart. Miss Bertha's life and simple faith in "Holy God", as she followed and obeyed Jesus is convicting and strengthening for any true believer. The book is a "must have" for a Christian's library. I plan to read this book many times over!
