The Bobby-Soxer: A Novel, by Hortense Calisher

Hortense Calisher’s revelatory novel of celebrity, small-town values, and a young woman’s coming of age
Famous playwright Craig Towle has decided to return to his New Jersey hometown, a suburb of New York City. He arrives with his world-renowned reputation and a new wife who is half his age. It is the 1950s, and the new couple raises plenty of eyebrows—in particular, those of the narrator, an adolescent girl who is full of observations, but not judgments. At the center of this layered novel is the narrator’s unconventional family and their odd fixation on Towle, which goes beyond his mere celebrity. The secrets of their past and the potential involvement of Towle in the family’s lineage intertwine in a potentially devastating turn.

From Library Journal
Told in a retrospective, conversational style, this emotionally charged story tells the tale of a "modern girl" of the 1950s as she recalls her coming of age in a small New Jersey town. The novel revolves around the return to town of a famous playwright, Craig Towle, his marriage to a very young woman (Bobby Soxer), and the intellectual and sexual awakenings he causes in the town, its people, and, in particular, a girl on the edge of womanhood. Calisher has a gift for evoking both the American small town intricacies and the inner workings of an adolescent's heart. Her prose effectively communicates the often-lost, intimate moments that daily lives consist of, and a languid sensuality pervades her book. Recommnded for most fiction collections. Well worth the effort to read
By A reader in MA
This is a challenging book, but Hortense Calisher is a brilliant writer and I would urge anyone to hang in through places where they might feel a little lost. There is much to gain from this novel by a writer who delivers the richest characters on earth.

Difficult, but worth it
By Pameladen
I'm still uncertain if I like this book or not. However, I will remember it, not for its unusual story, but the writer's style. See for yourself.

Bobby-Soxer
By Jkelly
This is a coming of age story of a young woman growing up in a small town in New Jersey in the 1950's. It deals with the discovery of knowing your family with all their faults...her father having a mistress who dies and leaves her estate to his wife and daughter, her father's mother who is 100 years old and still rules the family, her mother, a southerner who lays on the couch reading and eating bon bons but dresses each day as if to dine with the King of France.

The family drifts apart over the years as the young woman grows and becomes a remarkable woman and in doing so finds out the wonderful secrets of her family.
