About the Author
Graham Burns graduated from the University of Durham in 1980, joined Stephenson Harwood in 1981 and was admitted as a solicitor in 1983. He joined Stephenson Harwood's shipping department on its creation as a separated department in 1985, since when he has specialised in all aspects of ship finance work, including sale, purchase and registration and the financing of new and second hand vessels, for both lenders and borrowers. He became a partner in Stephenson Harwood in 1988 and, as well as the first edition of this book, has had numerous articles published and spoken widely on ship finance subjects at conferences in England and abroad.

Chapter 1 - Introduction

The International Element

More than most other forms of finance, ship finance is international. A ship is an unusual asset. Most ships move - or are capable of moving - all over the world. The financing of large ocean-going ships is undertaken by banks all over the world, by no means just for owners in their own country. On the contrary, and certainly for larger ships and larger owners, one is more likely to find (e.g.) an American bank, acting through its London office, lending to a Greek-controlled owning company and securing itself on a Liberian registered ship. There may be a degree of patriotism - but if a foreign bank can offer better terms, then owners, accustomed to international dealings in the everyday operation of their ships, will not be troubled about dealing with foreign lenders.

There are two common elements. First, the universal currency of international shipping is the US dollar. Loans in other currencies, except to owners who operate their vessels within narrow geographical confines, such as ferry operators, and therefore have the bulk of their income in local currency, are relatively rare. For ships which trade worldwide, income will almost invariably be in US dollars and ships will be bought and sold in US dollars; hence, to limit exposure to currency fluctuations, loans (and loan repayments) will be in US dollars. (Although multi-currency options appear in facilities from time to time, they tend normally to be dollar based.)

The second common element is the importance of English law. London remains one of the world's major shipping centres. Although major British owners are now few and far between, and the importance of the Baltic Exchange for fixing employment for ships has diminished as technology has advanced, a very large proportion of the world's fleet is insured or reinsured through the London insurance market and much financing is still done by banks in London. English law, and London arbitration, are common choices of parties to shipping contracts, such as charterparties, even where those parties have no obvious connection with England and where the ship may never come near an English port. This is not to play down the role of other legal systems: it is simply that historically English law has attained an ascendancy in the world of shipping which other legal systems have yet to succeed in shaking off.

A book everyone should read

The story of the Irish enslavement by the British in the 17th and 18th centuries is omitted by most history books, or else presented as a pleasant "work for travel cost" indentured-servant program. This book gives a raw picture of the reality experienced by the tens of thousands of Irish slaves who were taken to the West Indies through the voice of woman in her forced testimony just before she is executed. The slave masters' creation of "black" African slaves versus "white" Irish slaves was started at this time in order to divide their joint efforts in rebellion. In all of my years of studying history, I never learned this story until I read McCafferty's book. It has motivated me to research further into this hidden human genocide. This well-written story places the reader in the time where life was very cheap and justice very rare.

While the story is fiction, the historical facts are not. So many people overlook the enslavement of the Irish in the Caribbean, where the template for slavery in the Colonies was formed. I had no idea that the "Free Blacks", at first, were the offspring of the African man and the Irish woman in attempts to make a hardier slave. A superior slave, so to speak. It's not a pretty story, but what is when you have a ruling class with no regard for the people who make their luxurious lives possible--similar to life in the USA today. I've read the book twice and recommend it highly.

STEVEN I. PFEIFFER, PHD, is a licensed psychologist and Professor and Director of Clinical Training in the combined School Psychology and Counseling Psychology program at Florida State University. An authority on the psychology of giftedness, he is the lead author of the Gifted Rating Scales, a widely used measure to help identify gifted students published by Pearson Assessment. Previously, Dr. Pfeiffer served as Executive Director of Duke University's acclaimed precollegiate gifted program.

LIKE THE LAST CHAPTER OF THE FIRST BOOK.

This title was more like a last chapter of the first book. It was a good chapter but certainly not for the amount I paid. I would not recommend anyone buying it. Just go on to the third book-- and hope that it is longer than this one was. Books like this are at I hate series. You are left feeling unfulfilled and you will have to spend money to have any chance of finding what happened with the cliffhanger, and, even then, you can't be sure you'll get your answer--you may just pay to get the next cliffhanger. It appears that there are 6 parts to this series and I think I'll just stop at book 2 and find a book that is complete in just one and for sure not more than 2.

GREAT BOOK!

I've recently started this series and have been so wrapped up in it that I've already purchased next three titles. I think Carrie's story is common with many attractive women who aren't that size two or drop-dead gorgeous. I think it encourages the average woman to realize that just because a man is very attractive or financially well off does not make him unattainable. Anyone, when well matched, can have as hot, erotic, and intimate a relationship as Carrie and David (and HOT it is). GREAT BOOK!

Overall the book was good. The sex scenes were hot. This time around David invites Carrie to spend a week away with him and some of his friends at the Chalet. Little does either realize this vacation will be a test to their relationship, as well as take a turn that no one saw coming.

Note: I wish that Carrie would have more self confidence and believe that her curves is not a deterrent but a gift and blessing.
