About the Author
Hortense Calisher (1911–2009) was born in New York City. The daughter of a young German-Jewish immigrant mother and a somewhat older Jewish father from Virginia, she graduated from Barnard College in 1932 and worked as a sales clerk before marrying and moving to Nyack, New York, to raise her family. Her first book, a collection of short stories titled In the Absence of Angels, appeared in 1951. She went on to publish two dozen more works of fiction and memoir, writing into her nineties.A past president of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and of PEN, the worldwide association of writers, she was a National Book Award finalist three times, won an O. Henry Award for “The Night Club in the Woods” and the 1986 Janet Heidinger Kafka Prize for The Bobby Soxer, and was awarded Guggenheim Fellowships in 1952 and 1955.�

This is a challenging book, but Hortense Calisher is a brilliant writer and I would urge anyone to hang in through places where they might feel a little lost. There is much to gain from this novel by a writer who delivers the richest characters on earth.

Bobby-Soxer

This is a coming of age story of a young woman growing up in a small town in New Jersey in the 1950's. It deals with the discovery of knowing your family with all their faults...her father having a mistress who dies and leaves her estate to his wife and daughter, her father's mother who is 100 years old and still rules the family, her mother, a southerner who lays on the couch reading and eating bon bons but dresses each day as if to dine with the King of France.

The family drifts apart over the years as the young woman grows and becomes a remarkable woman and in doing so finds out the wonderful secrets of her family.

An advanced text

Harmonic Charts is an excellent text for exploring harmonics, an aspect of astrology that is not used as much as other more mainstraem approaches to the birth chart, but is, in my opinion, a very fascinating branch of study in the filed.
Hamblin's book is very accessible, unlike other books on this topic that i have read, that seem to muddy the waters rather than clarify them. If you want to learn this technique and understand it, without loosing in depth, this book is a very good place to start. I really liked it. Lots of case studies to play with, lots of interesting observations on the mathematical nature of the chart, on aspects and even on the application of harmonics to synastry.
As a former physicist and mathematician, I love harmonics as this branch of astrology feels very pure and very close to the essence of things...are numeric patterns the underlying language of life? Play with Hamblin's harmonics and find out for yourself ....Excellent mind fun.

In Physica, Hildegard presents nine “books” of healing systems: Plants, Elements, Trees, Stones, Fish, Birds, Animals, Reptiles, and Metals. In each book she discusses the qualities of these natural creations and elaborates on their medicinal use, explaining how to prepare and apply different remedies. With its emphasis on balancing the humors, Physica has strong affinity with the Oriental medical approaches gaining great respect today. The modern reader interested in natural healing will recognize the enormous truth in the theories of this twelth-century physician, many of which prove effective today, serving as a reminder that our cures for illness depend on our natural world and our place in it. A Latin and Greek scholar, translator PRISCILLA THROOP holds a master’s degree from the Centre for Medieval Studies at the University of Toronto, as well as a Certificate of Advanced Theological Studies from the Episcopal Divinity School in Cambridge. She is a member of the Vermont Classical Language Association and is currently translating Isidore of Seville’s Etymologiae. She lives in Charlotte, Vermont.

My husband and I are enjoying reading this book. Since Hildegard has been made a Doctor of the Catholic Church, we've been exploring her writings and music. Our complaint is that the translation of this book doesn't well reflect the deep faith of St. Hildegard: she believed in Jesus and much of what she wrote was the fruit of prayer and study. This book translates the parts speaking of her faith rather stumblingly. We look forward to a more informed translation of this and her other books.

Translation avoiding Christian themes

This book is very interesting as other reviewers noted. The biggest issue I have with it is the poor translation of Christian themes (natural to a work written by a nun of the 12th century). Where the word "demon" is used in the original text, the translator, Priscilla Throop, renders it as "airy spirit". And yes, there is a big difference between an "airy spirit" and a demon. Consider which one you would want in your bedroom at night. Yes, there is a difference. This makes me wonder what else Throop is twisting to fit her own worldview instead of simply giving us Hildegard's writings in common English.

This is a really in-depth review of everything I learned about biology throughout my life ! I was really nice to refresh the memories of how the processes in the human body work, the chemistry of it all. The book is filled with diagrams and pictures, as well as the main points and curiosities regarding each topic. It contains everything about cells, the DNA and the structure of animals and plants. It was a good read !

This is a great series! I looked over this and read some of this when I purchased it for my daughter, it really seems to explain biology in an easy, concise manner! If you have always struggled with traditional biology textbooks, this e-book is a much better choice for explaining biology principles in way that makes much more sense for the beginning biology student!
